Get the dish on Thanksgiving traditions

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and everyone is getting ready to spend the holiday with their families.

Making the Thanksgiving meal is a great way to bond as a family. It is joyous to work together and make food that your family enjoys.

Traditional American foods served on Thanksgiving include turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Vegetarians may substitute turkey with tofu and enjoy their meal with side dishes such as squash and salads.

Food is a major part of Thanksgiving, and therefore many traditions surround it.

Breaking the wishbone is also common practice in many households. As two people pull the wishbone, they make a wish. According to a legend, whoever ends up with the larger part of the bone has his or her wish granted. The wishbone has been dated back to England in the 16th century, when it was originally known as “merrythought. Families pull on the wishbone hoping for good fortune, and some people make wishes hoping their wish will come true.

The main meal is often followed by various desserts. One such option is pie of many flavors such as pumpkin, pecan, key lime and Dutch apple.

Another Thanksgiving tradition is watching the Thanksgiving Day football games. The NFL games are always intense, and it is a tradition to watch these games with your family.

These Thanksgiving games are some of the biggest rivalry games of the season.

As most families stay indoors, others spend their days outdoors, playing various activities and just having a great time. Some people do not like to spend the whole day inside, so they go out to have a  family football game and other competitive activities.

This Thanksgiving should be a day spent with your family and friends; have a great time and be safe.
