Kimye or Kim-nay?

A custom Givenchy haute couture wedding gown, a sixteenth century Italian fort and a celebrity-packed guest list? Sounds like a Kardashian family affair.

Kim Kardashian’s and Kanye West’s glamorous May 24 nuptials were on the cover of almost every major gossip magazine, such as People and Us. The basic economic principle of supply and demand implies that gossip magazines would only supply Kimye-covered magazines if there were a demand for it, which begs the question, why are we fascinated with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian?

“The mixture of Kimye has drama written all over it,” senior Chelcee Del Rosario said. “Basically, they’re two people whose lives are drama filled. Plus, this is Kim’s third marriage and with the recent dissolution of [her] marriage with Kris, many wonder how long this marriage will last.”

There is no denying that Kimye may easily be one of the most controversial celebrity couples. With Kardashian having around 14 million followers on Instagram and West having close to half a million followers, their lives are always on display to the public. In fact, the Huffington Post reported that Kardashian’s photo of her kissing West at their wedding broke Instagram’s record for the most likes with over two million likes and counting, which means millions of people are still watching their every step.

What it comes down to is Kimye’s joint wealth (estimated to be $155 million by net worth firm site, Wealth-X) is something that we can only dream of. Kimye’s luxurious lifestyle offers a sense of escapism during an economic recession, and it is relaxing to occasionally ignore our mundane lives for a short period to indulge in their extravagant lives. What is better than an over-the-top wedding to do just that? We might outwardly disapprove of Kimye’s way of life and even hate them, but a part of us is still fascinated by how fabulously wealthy they are and wonder what it would be like to be that rich.
