On Oct. 24-25, Woodbridge High girls’ golf team held league finals at Mesa Linda Golf Course. Over the two competitive days, the players competed for a spot to advance to CIF Individual Regionals. League finals were marked as the final game for the seniors, including co-captain Claire Ahn.
Coach Andrew Parker acknowledged the team’s challenging part and said, “We’re playing against some of the best girls in southern section, a lot of these teams are moving on to D1 so a lot of these girls can shoot under par. Our goal, I think, would be an honor to make it to the second day. This sport will chew you up, so sometimes it’s better to go on without high expectations… League finals is always interesting because gals who think they’d take it sometimes combust and have a tough go at it, so sometimes you get players who are just playing exceptionally well that day get carried to the second day.”
Representatives of Woodbridge High, Claire Ahn, Lulu Ma, Byul Chung, and Abby Sarigumba competed in the league finals.
Bringing back strong scores on day 1, Ma scored a 75 (+5), Chung an 81 (+11), Ahn a 78 (+8), and Sarigumba an 88 (+18). Ahn, Lulu, and Byul have secured their spots to advance on Day 2. After competing for 36 holes, Ahn and Ma qualified for CIF Individual Regionals at Los Serranos South Course in Chino Hills, held on Oct. 30 as an outcome.
Co-captain Claire Ahn shared her experience and said, “League finals is like a two-day tournament, so I thought it was typically harder for me to perform equally as well or better on the second day because I was tired, and there was like a lot of pressure to qualify.”
Junior Lulu Ma sympathized and mentioned this season’s competitiveness. Ma said, “For this year there’s a lot of really good freshmen coming in and they shoot like under, so I guess it will be like more competitive but also more fun.”
At CIF Regionals Ma fell just one stroke short of cutting, while Anh hit her last few shots on the course as a Woodbridge High golfer. Battling in the cold morning conditions with mixed emotions, players have finished representing Woodbridge High this season.
League finals and CIF have marked the endpoint of the 2024-2025 season. Sharing farewells, Ma shared her gratitude towards the seniors and expressed, “We will always be with you and remember you guys.”
Coach Parker also shared his gratefulness and said, “They’re a really big piece of our team.”
From a senior’s perspective, Ahn talked about the team’s bond and memories of sharing her farewell with the team, saying, “Off the course, we did a lot of team bonding and really built a strong community, almost like a family.”
Congratulations to Mizuki Ito, Taylor Ro, and Claire Anh. Special thanks for their dedication, hard work, smiles, and memories they have brought to the team throughout the seasons.
The season has come to an end, Woodbridge High girls’ golf team looks forward to continuing to achieve their goals with fresh rosters acknowledging the seniors’ legacy.
