On Oct. 12, the junior varsity girls basketball team played a competitive match against the San Juan Hills Trojans at Portola High. With both teams giving their all, the Stallions managed to claim victory with a final score of 28-17.
When the first half of the game had started, the Stallions were able to score first on the board, giving them the lead with 3 points. Though the Warriors quickly caught up, the Stallions managed to claim the lead once more and win the first half with a score of 16-12. Despite the initial loss, the Warriors were able to achieve some goals that they created for themselves.
“Some goals that I’ve wanted to make for this game on Saturday was to communicate more as well as like, have better passes, and I think I was able-definitely able to communicate better and have stronger passes to my teammates,” member Emma Vasquez said.
Throughout the second half of the game, the Trojans continued to maintain their lead against the Warriors. While both teams played an intense match the Warriors ultimately lost with a final score of 28-17.
Although not winning the match in the end, the team maintains a positive mindset and is working hard for the upcoming games.
“I feel like as a whole, our team got a lot better and we all improved, so I’m glad we have that, like exponential growth, and then hopefully by the time the season starts, we can win some games,” said member Lakshmi Suresh.
The team has especially noticed how their abilities to play have gotten increasingly better compared to their last games.
“Even though we lost, our team was pretty satisfied because we did better than in other games, so we see the improvement and, um, there was a lot of more communication and overall just better performance,” member Rita Khomenko said.
Some areas where the team felt they could try and do better on were also spotted during the game.
“I think what we could work on is definitely teamwork of our team in general. Um, I think we just need to practice together more so that we can, um, build better foundations for everyone, and to get better plays and everything,” Vasquez said.
The team overall hopes that as they continue competing in more games, they’ll grow their skills together and start to win matches once the season begins.
