Woodbridge High’s Fashion Club president and junior Chelsea Wang believes that the layering associated with fall fashion is a great way to experiment with clothes.
“Fall fashion to me is an opportunity to create some really interesting outfits…in the warmer seasons, there’s not much opportunity to do a lot of layering because it’s really hot…so in the fall, we get to do a lot more interesting silhouettes [and] more layers,” Wang said.
Wang brings up the point that brands focused on staying up to date with the latest trends are often fast fashion, which are clothes that are typically made with synthetic fibers and produced under unethical practices. Instead, she advocates for slow fashion.
“Slow fashion [releases collections] seasonally,” Wang said, “fall/winter collections, spring/summer collections…and before like the age of social media…[this] was how most brands were.”
Sophomore Thomas Nguyen notices a shift in the weather but also in his wardrobe, swapping his summer staples for a cozier fall look.
“During the summer, I wore a lot of jorts in light colors and now that it’s fall, I start wearing dark colors,” Nguyen said. “I wear more jeans now instead of jorts and I wear jackets and sweaters.”
As sustainability echoes in the fashion choices within Woodbridge High’s community, Thomas Nguyen upcycles, or reuses, his clothes as he switches from season to season. He encourages others to consider doing the same.
“If you want to make [your own style], you can make your own [clothes], I alter a lot of my clothes. For example, I alter a lot of jeans. I make jorts out of them too for the summer,” Nguyen said.
With fall marking the start of a new school year, routines shift as Woodbridge High students trade their breezy, laid-back summer looks for more layered warm outfits. Senior Pauline Nguyen takes a no-fuss approach to this seasonal transition, liking comfort and staples that never fail.
Fall fashion is less about chasing the latest fads and more about embracing reli
able and versatile pieces. She favors timeless, classic looks that capture the coziness of the season.
“I think about sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, sweatpants, Uggs [and] beanies,” Pauline Nguyen said.
To keep her classic style feeling fresh, Pauline Nguyen turns to social media platforms for styling ideas.
“I like going on Pinterest and looking at outfits to get inspiration. [I also look at] fashion influencers on TikTok,” Pauline Nguyen said.
Sophomore Masa Aihara thinks that accessories, especially jewelry from brands like Vivienne Westwood and Chrome Hearts, are key to perfecting a fall outfit, often getting inspiration from Instagram fashion accounts like @dannynguyenn_.
“When I don’t have my studs or a chain on, I really feel naked,” Aihara said.
Although he enjoys accessorizing with statement pieces, Aihara prefers a casual style, opting for more comfort rather than complexity.
“In the summer, I just wear jewelry with t-shirts and sometimes long sleeves if it’s colder,” Aihara said. “But for fall, I go for cozy stuff like sweatpants, jeans and hoodies.”
As autumn and school set in, it’s the ideal time to refresh your wardrobe while making sustainable choices.
