Winter in Southern California (SoCal) stays bright, and Woodbridge High students know there are plenty of festive activities that cost almost nothing. From icy nights at the Spectrum to glowing lakeside walks, the season offers simple ways to get outside, explore and enjoy the holidays without draining a student budget.
Blurb 1. Ice skating at the Irvine Spectrum on Tuesday discount day
The Spectrum rink remains one of the most popular winter hangouts for Woodbridge High students. With music playing, lights shining and skaters moving past the giant tree, the atmosphere feels upbeat and cheerful. Tuesday discount day keeps the price low, making it an easy after-school outing to kick off the week with friends.
Blurb 2. Walking through the Woodbridge Lakes holiday lights
This holiday staple starts right in the neighborhood. Each December, homes around the lakes turn into glowing displays that attract families, students and anyone looking for a peaceful evening stroll. It is free, close by and perfect for taking a break from homework without going far.
Blurb 3. Riding the Laguna Beach Free Trolley
For students looking for a little adventure, the free trolley offers ocean views, downtown charm, and a chance to explore Laguna without paying for parking. Woodbridge High students enjoy spending time with friends and stopping at galleries, small cafes and scenic lookout points. It feels like a mini holiday getaway, all for no cost.
Blurb 4. Hiking the Jeffrey Trail
For a quieter winter activity, the Jeffrey Trail is a reliable favorite. The path winds through Irvine and offers open space, greenery and long stretches ideal for walking or biking. It works for early sunrises, after-school walks or slow weekend strolls.
Blurb 5. Watching the Newport Beach Christmas Parade
This long-running harbor parade draws crowds each December as boats decorated with lights and music glide across the water. Students enjoy finding a spot along the shore to take in the festive display. It is lively, local and completely free to enjoy.
Winter in SoCal does not need fancy trips or expensive tickets. With a few nearby spots and good company, the season still feels full of energy, comfort and holiday excitement.
When the temperature finally dips in Irvine and Woodbridge High School students start showing up to class in hoodies they have not worn since last January, something shifts. The long evenings, colder mornings and early sunsets set the stage for what many students are calling their Cozy Chronicles era.
Creativity becomes another go-to winter ritual. Instead of scrolling, students set aside time for projects like painting tote bags, scrapbooking fall memories, making handmade cards for friends or trying trending Pinterest crafts like clay bead bracelets. Friend groups who prefer noise and energy bring their winter indoors with game nights. Mario Kart tournaments, Uno Flip, Catan, chess and charades fill living rooms, often paired with snack potlucks featuring Trader Joe’s cookie butter or microwave brownies. Others opt for themed movie nights, hosting Disney throwback nights, winter rom-com marathons or comfort-movie gatherings with favorites like La La Land or Ten Things I Hate About You , sometimes adding fairy lights or a projector to set the mood. Some even pull out a projector or hang fairy lights to make the night feel special.
For others, winter nights mean cozy cooking. Students bake chocolate chip cookies, make waffles with Nutella, build ramen bowls with added egg and vegetables, or whip up quick mug cakes. Some gather to make peppermint bark or decorate holiday cookies as a way to unwind.
