Jazz band brings the swing

Jazz Band lit up the music quad with music, dancing and fun at the annual Swing Dance event on May 15. Paper decorations and bright lights were hung from the awning, creating an upbeat and lively atmosphere as students danced the night away to live jazz and swing music provided by the Jazz Bands.

The entire event was three hours long; for the first hour, a professional dance instructor taught attendees basic swing dancing moves. Attendees formed two circles, one inside of the other, and were able to learn the dance with rotating partners as the circles moved in opposite directions, a situation that was awkward for some and the perfect icebreaker for others.

“There were a lot of people, and I was surprised by how quickly people were able to pick up the dance. There are a lot of good dancers at Woodbridge apparently,” senior Anupama Sridhar said. “I always enjoy jazz band. They’re really good and the music selection was on point.”

For the remainder of the night, students were free to dance, socialize, eat or just listen to the live performance.

“Swing dance is my favorite Woodbridge event of the year!” senior Rae Holcomb said. “It really brings the community together in a way that nothing else does. The live music from our fantastic jazz bands, the decorations, and the classic dances create the perfect atmosphere to meet new people and just have fun!”
