Junior Lina Kim originally did not anticipate the endurance that archery would entail, but she quickly learned that her sport not only requires physical strength but mental agility as well. For the past four years, Kim has been training under an Olympic gold medalist to compete locally and nationally as a talented archer. She says that she has grown from these experiences, traveling to Arizona, Alabama and Indiana for competitions. “Archery is an individual sport, so there is a lot of mental pressure because you can’t really depend on other people,” Kim said. Kim plans to continue her sport, continuing to build her skills throughout high school and in college. While she enjoys sharing her love of archery with others, she is often asked a lot of questions when she shares her sport with others. “I think that there are a lot of misconceptions about archery because it comes up in a lot of fiction,” Kim said. “Archery requires a lot of mental focus, and practicing archery improves your focusing skills. Archery is fun and challenging at the same time.” Kim’s unique sport has not only given her a unique perspective on archers featured in works of fiction, but has developed her concentration, persistence and competitive spirit.
