When it comes to politics, I will be the first to admit that I am not the most knowledgeable person on the subject. However, there is one “political” topic that I feel very strongly about: marriage equality. First of all, I do not believe that marriage of any kind should be viewed as a political topic, and the decision to marry should lie solely between the two individuals who want to be together.

Knowing that many of my close friends, one of my family members and countless other Americans may be affected by discriminatory laws that prohibit their personal freedoms upsets me. Further, I find myself questioning the morality of others when I hear derogatory terms toward gay people being thrown around at school and in other public places.

To me, the opposition of gay marriage by politicians and citizens of America displays discrimination and contradicts a key principle that this country was built around – equality. Today’s fight for marriage equality mirrors the African American fight for Civil Rights as well as other situations where minorities face unfair treatment.

I believe that there is no difference between judging someone by the color of their skin and judging someone by sexual orientation, and, frankly, it appalls me that this type of discrimination even exists. With that being said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
