The girls soccer team revels in its victory over Newport Harbor.

Girls soccer (1-5-1) had its first win of the season 3-1 against Newport Harbor High on Dec. 4 at University District Stadium.

“Collectively as a team, we played very well. The game was actually a great stepping stone for the rest of our season,” co-captain and junior Amanda Cooper said. “We had really good passing sequences. I think that everyone did their job and we worked hard for each other.”

Its triumph against Newport Harbor High was an important boost for the team. The game was the first win and third game in the season.

“They played really well; I’m an avid supporter of girls soccer and I think they have a great team this year,” junior Matt Park said. “The game today made me actually really proud of our school’s team so far.”

Junior Kara Gilchrist scored the first goal of the game off of senior and co-captain Ariel Bruss’ assist. Utilizing Bruss’ passing skills again, Gilchrist scored a second goal later on in the game.

Freshman Rachel Glasl scored her first varsity goal of the season off the top of the penalty box on Bruss’ assist one last time to bring the team to the final winning score of 3-1.

“[Gilchrist] played a really awesome game. Everyone played with such a high intensity and a great, positive mentality. During that game, it felt like we could beat any team that we competed against,” Bruss said.

Goalie and junior Tianna Sanders made key saves throughout the length of the game, letting only one goal from the Newport Harbor team slide. While Newport Harbor’s intensity at the University District Stadium was high, the Warriors’ passes and subsequent goals pulled them through to a needed victory.

“We came out with a lot of energy and as a young group of girls, we have a lot of potential and opportunity to grow to be a team that could do really well in league. Our game [against Newport Harbor] showed that we could be very good if we play to our strengths,” co-captain Gilchrist said. “This could really turn out to be a very good season for us.”
