The Southern California Regional Amici Madness (SCRAM), hosted by CAJCL at different schools every year takes place around October. S.C.R.A.M. offers a variety of activities to choose from, including dodgeball, Certamen (a trivia game), gladiator fights, and more. It’s a fun way to socialize and meet new people, and have even more fun participating in activities.
As mentioned earlier, there are many activities to partake in. However, there is a requirement to take at least two and at most three academic tests. JCLers are also able to socialize with other JCLers from different schools and make friends.
John Conant, advisor of Woodbridge High’s JCL and the Latin teacher, stated, “S.C.R.A.M. is a more relaxed atmosphere, because the kids basically have a lot more autonomy, they can participate in the events that interest them, they can socialize, they basically can do what they want.” Conant also said, “In my opinion, the most valuable thing about the Junior Classical League is as a social club, because you meet people who, basically who have it together, and S.C.R.A.M. is an opportunity to go and spend the day with these people, and it’s an opportunity to bond.”
One important thing to note is that the location of SCRAM changes yearly, and the most recent SCRAM was held on Oct. 25, 2025 at Harbor Day School in Newport Beach, CA. It has also been described, according to Chelsea Im, WHS JCL’s president, as “kind of like state convention, but instead of, like, the whole weekend, it’s only half a day, and it’s where all of these different schools from all over the state come.” Im had also stated, “I honestly think SCRAM has anything and everything that you could think of. Art, sports, academics, leadership…”
When asked about what to do at SCRAM, Im had given advice, saying, “I’d say, be super open, like last year, when I- Last year was actually my first time going, but I remember doing like, dodgeball (I hate dodgeball), and I did it, and it was so fun… Everyone there is so nice, so I feel like, just go for it. If you think it even interests you, like a little bit, just
do it. It will be worth it.”
Conant had also advised about what to do at SCRAM, stating, “I think the best way to promote SCRAM is to talk to people who have been to SCRAM, because invariably, the kids who have been to SCRAM have a really good time and they’ll tell you about what they did the year before… The more you do, the more fun you’ll have. And so, sign up for as many activities as you can.”
