Stop waiting for that bouquet

Over the month of March, I found myself returning to a terribly problematic addiction— Pinterest. In my excessive pinning, though, I stumbled upon a quote that really struck a chord with me:

“Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.” – Juan Luis Borges

I find this quote so impactful because it embodies exactly the outlook on life that I strive to have. Growing up, I had always been the person who craved approval from others and lacked the confidence to act independently.

Over the past few years, however, I have tried to change that about myself. With time, I have come to the realization that, in Borges’ language, I do not need someone to bring me flowers to start planting myself a garden. In other words, I simply do not need to depend on others to find my own happiness or success.

I am not saying that anyone should go through life alone, because I think having support from others is definitely necessary. I do believe, however, that it is important to not always leave your contentment or achievements in the hands of others.

People should not have to rely on another’s approval to pursue their own interests or move forward with their ideas. In the same way, if you are proud of something you have worked hard on, there is no need to search for compliments or validation from others. Hence, I urge you all to stop waiting around for that bouquet of flowers and go plant yourself a garden.

Sincerely,

Samiha Ali
