Winter Sports has officially arrived. One of the hardest, challenging, and most rewarding sports is here. Wrestling is here. The first wrestling tournament is November 29 at 10 am.
Wrestling is the sport of heroes, it precedes time; Hercules wrestled his first Olympics before it could even be recorded. Wrestling has been making heroes out of average joes for millenia. Hercules took wrestling and made the Olympics but it all started with wrestling.
According to the US Wrestling Foundation, “Wrestling is the perfect foundation for all other sports.” According to PubMed Central, “traditional wrestling training significantly enhances respiratory muscle strength and aerobic endurance” and that wrestling overall can “improve athletic performance.” This shows that wrestling basically created foundations for all sports.
For example football, football has all sorts of super important rules to follow if you want to win. These rules include being low and being good at tackling and not afraid of contact. Wrestling
uses all these things in its own sport. Another example is Track, running takes good pace and stamina. The most stamina building sport is wrestling; creating a base for you to work with when first starting. To wrestle you don’t have to be rich to buy equipment like you do for hockey, you don’t have to practice for 10 years to be great; you can start wrestling in ninth grade and be great by the end of your first year.
Some sports require you to have a certain build, for example in basketball you have to be tall and for football you have to be big and be able to take a hit but in wrestling someone that is short and small could beat a person that is tall and big, you can’t do that in any other sport. Wrestling season starts Oct. 13 and ends Feb. 26. Practices are weekdays from 2:30 to 4:30, but on Mondays and Fridays there is a weight room session, extending the practices for one hour.
Wrestling is a great learning space for contact if some people want to play a contact sport that is a little safer. Wrestling builds skills that can be used in so many different varieties of sports.
According to the US Wrestling Foundation, “Wrestling is balance, agility, hand–eye coordination, flexibility, positioning, strength, speed, explosiveness, footwork, hustle, mental focus, mental toughness, core strength, concentration, competition, and endurance”.When people hear that wrestling can improve technique for other sports it makes them want to wrestle even more to get better at other sports while having fun wrestling. We asked 3 people if they want to do wrestling and they all said yes but they don’t really want to. So we provided them with the information that wrestling is a foundation for all kinds of sports.
“This makes me want to pursue wrestling a lot more now,” freshman Herman Lopez said.
“It makes wrestling more like worth it,” freshman Ellis Tooley said.
Tooley and Lopez were two of a group of people that might want to do wrestling but they aren’t completely sure. Lucien Crane says that he wants to pursue track after wrestling and was very thrilled to hear that wrestling improves stamina. You better sign up quickly because wrestling season ends in February.
In the off-season, in the Fall and Spring wrestling practices still happen and so do tournaments so you can still compete and get better. Hercules wasn’t great because he wrestled, but he wouldn’t have been great if he hadn’t. This shaped Hercules’ life into a heroic and courageous one. Joining the wrestling team gives modern high school students a chance of greatness in parts of their life they never dreamed possible
