Varsity Football is going into the CIF State championship after a slow start to the season.
The first game the Warriors went against Calvary Chapel, which ended in a sad Warrior loss 35-0. The second game was also a Warrior loss. This game we lost 37-0 against Kennedy. The third game of the Warriors went against Irvine High. This game was the uphill for Woodbridge High, when Warriors started to make improvements. The Irvine High game was also a loss but it was only a 14 point difference, which is only two touchdowns. Final score, 28-14.
The fourth game of the season was against Northwood High 38-7. Freshman Waylon Stone scored a touchdown.
The next game was against Beckman High ending with a depressing score of 35-14. Woodbridge scored two touchdowns by Stone.
The next game was against Portola High, a close game of 17-7. Touchdown scored by Stone. Game 7 against Pacifica High was one of the last losses Woodbridge High took before going on. Game 7 against Pacifica ended with an aggravating loss of 55-7.
Game 8, this is the steep uphill Woodbridge needed to start dominating. Game 8 against Katella High with a killer score of 35-0. With an astounding 3 rushing touchdowns and 2 passing touchdowns by Waylon Stone.
Next Game, Game 9, against Uni. The biggest nail biter of a game, but a win for Woodbridge in the end. With a final score of 37-36, a win in double overtime.
Double overtime means each team gets a possession starting at the opponent’s 25-yard line, but if tied after the first overtime series, the second overtime requires touchdowns and mandatory 2-point conversion attempts after any touchdown, with no game clock but play clock rules. It’s essentially a “shootout” of 2-point plays until someone scores and the other doesn’t, or scores fewer points.
The MVP of this game was undoubtedly senior Kayjahn Pitts with 4 rushing touchdowns. Pitts was actually a linebacker most of his high school football career. But his senior year new coaching staff was input and saw Kayjahn would be more powerful at running back, which was the best choice for all. The last touchdown was by Stone.
With the score at 36-35 the Warriors had to make a 2-point conversion to win the game, and of course none other than Pitts’ army crawled his way to the endzone. Additionally at a kick-off receive for Uni High David Bosley sent a Uni player to the hospital with a crazy tackle. This game was followed by an aggravating loss to Buena Park, 22-14. With one passing touchdown and a rushing
touchdown by Stone.
This should have ended the season but by some miracle the Warriors got into the CIF games. The first CIF game was against Desert Hot Springs High. The Warriors Won 28-13. With rushing touchdowns by Pitts, and 1 passing play by Stone. The Defense was insane this game and Hunter King with a pick six. Then another game against Buena park for
revenge, this was another Woodbridge win, 23-16.
David Bosley had two rushing touchdowns and Pitts with one rushing touchdown.
The next game was against Saddleback High, another surprising Warrior win, 24-21. With all touchdowns being rushing touchdowns with two from David Bosley and one from Stone.
Then a game against Montebello High and the Warriors were able to pull out a win, 24-23. With one rushing touchdowns from David Bosley and two from Stone.
The next game was against San Fernando, 13-0 in Woodbridge’s favor. With a receiving touchdown from senior Jalen Webb and a touchdown from Pitts. Then the last game of the season against a private school, Redding Christian High, who recruits their players. With a sad ending to a crazy season, with the score of 16-0.
Throughout all these games the Woodbridge Warriors also had Fabian Grey, the kicker who helped the Warriors immensely.
With that the Warriors went the farthest they’ve ever gone before with nonstop energy and perseverance throughout everything. All of California has recognized Woodbridge by saying things like, “Woodbridge Varsity Football had a “dream season,” transforming from 0-7 to CIF Southern Section Champs and State Finalists”(Google).
We have seen a vast improvement from the Varsity Football team in just one season. Spectator and freshman football player Charlie Mabe said, “I think we can continue to get better and better because we have a lot of young players on this team a lot of sophomores and juniors that will be with us next year and they’ve already improved this much”.
Another spectator freshman Lena Kowsari said, “I’ve seen, from the games that I’ve been to, crazy improvement that I did not expect from our team”.
These players have done so well this season and have put in effort, even with this loss, next year we will come back for revenge and be CIF Champions.
